Coming from FSX a few years ago, I don’t remember it looking this good. Quite frankly, I am amazed at how good X-Plane looks even without photo scenery. Maybe when I’ll have enough money to afford a second plane, I will start a separate tour across Europe, but for now I am staying in America!

There are a bunch of things that needs fixing though: Bugs like the cloudy water just should not happen, the colors should be toned down a bit, and the installer application should be able to revert to X-Plane’s default cloud rendering and remember it’s serial number. With a bit of work, Ultra Weather XP could be a good product. This is not exactly photo-realistic, but reasonably pretty in a cartoony kind of way. When I finally reach a safe altitude and the weather clears up a bit, there are some pretty nice vistas to be seen: The ground is shrouded in bright blue mist, there are inexplicable cumulus clouds above, and some strange fluffy stuff below.Īs I finally break through the clouds, I am greeted with more really strange vistas:įrame rates are terrible, and completely unaffected by my cloud visibility settings in the rendering options. According to the weather report, I am climbing through several solid layers of clouds, but that is certainly not visible in the game. Where I was getting a solid 30 FPS minutes ago, I am now stuck at 15. The water looks much less garish, the horizon is appropriately grey, and the clouds look half-way decent.īut then as I climb out of Montmagny, my frame rate tanks. Initially, these more modest settings look much better than before.

Also, you seem to need to enter the serial number every time you start Ultra Weather. Strangely enough, Ultra Weather apparently has no built-in way to reset the weather rendering to X-Plane’s default rendering settings. At least the frame rates are pretty good though, but I suspect that that has more to do with the limited visibility than with the cloud rendering.Īt Montmagny, I change my rendering settings to something less ludicrous. Hilariously, at some point the water rendering completely freaks out and does this: Ultra Weather provides a large number of different themes you can choose from, so I guess I just mis-configured it. Oh well, the first leg is only going to take me about 60 miles to Montmagny (CSE5), where I can change Ultra Weather’s settings. Notice the garish blue water, the green (!) horizon, the dual-colored clouds and those black fringes at the bottom of the dark clouds.

In March 2015, I discovered FSEconomy, a virtual economy for Flight Simulators. The first flight simulator running on my own computer was FS2004, then FSX, Prepar3D, and now X-Plane 10. The former me started simming on Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, on my grandparent’s computer, and just never really stopped.
